I have a Subaru forester automatic. My gear was in 3rd by accident and it didnt sound good. I put it back to drive and the sound stopped. Is my transmission going out?

Hi there!
Usually or most likely what you were hearing was the engine over revving because it wasn't in drive. I would not be to worried about it since in drive it seems normal.
What you can do is put it into 3rd again and see if the noise is quieter at lower speeds.
This might tell you if it was just the engine you were hearing.
