Customer Question

I have a 2003 Subaru Forester with a little under 60,000. I bought it about a year ago from my sister. The dealer is recommending a power steering system service for $140. The owner's manual does not mention this. I am skeptical. There is no problem with the power steering that I am aware of.

Optional Information:
Year: 2003
Make: Subaru

Already Tried:
Dealer recommends this service based on age and mileage. I am not having any problems.

I see this all too much lately... Dealer's pushing services that are not required or needed. According to the Subaru Normal Service Schedule, there is NO service interval at which to replace/flush the power steering system. The service schedule does state that the system should be inspected at intervals of every 30,000, however, the only time this needs to be done, is if there was service done to the system, and there was a chance of contamination, or if the wrong fluid/type was added by mistake. If you are not experiencing any problems, then no, there is no need to have the service done. It's an absolute shame that in this failing economy, Dealers are trying to take advantage of customers.
