Test drove an '03 WRX with 117k miles today. It had a strange rumble/rattle sound when off throttle, coasting. It went away when I would shift, accelerate, and cruise with throttle input, but it was always there when I would downshift or coast, throttle off, in gear, 2nd through 5th (I didnt try it in 1st)...Other than that the car seemed well sorted...Major trans or diff problems?

Welcome to Pearl.com, I'm Kevin and I'm here to help resolve your Automotive issue.Hello, from what you're describing, the vehicle may have a front differential issue. That is part of the transmission and a major repair. The sound you may be hearing could be the ring and pinion getting noisy. I suggest taking the car to a repair shop for an inspection before you purchase this car. I would also ask about maintenance history, these cars require frequent oil changes to keep the turbo charger in top condition as well as clean coolant. If the car was not maintained well, you can have major engine or turbo failure in the future.Let me know if I can help you further, Kevin
