sudden severe frontend shaking. Like a blown tire. No blown tire. After stopping it does not do it again for 100 or so miles. then sudden shaking again.

I would first jack up the frt of the car and put jack stands under the lower control arms let the jack down to put the weight on the lower control arms and grasping at the 12 and 6 oclock position wiggle the tire ,also you can use a big pry bar and place it under the tire and force the tire up if you see and movement in the lower ball joint ,
also grasp the tire in the 9&3 oclock position and wiggle the tire to check for play from the tie rods .look at the lower control arm bushings as well .
recheck the wheel nuts etc.
this may be that a ball joint or tie rod etc. is loose and driving down the road you may hit a small bump or ride in the road to trigger the shaking ...jazzmaster...
