Customer Question

I have a 2001 Subaru Outback with 220,000km on the clock. The Engine Check Light keeps coming on and is often on for days at a time. I have looked it up in the manual and it states the problem is with the Emissions Control System. I took it into the local Subaru dealer; they checked and came up with a 409?? error with the catalyst? He was Swedish and I speak English so not really sure what he said was wrong but that it would cost a lot to repair.

I am thinking it could be the oxygen sensors, the catalytic converter or maybe the cabon canister?

Greetings Sir or Madam and welcome to JA! I will do my very best to assist you with your problem.
Hi there!
The converter code is a P0420. I believe this is the likely code.
Although it is possible there is an issue with the rear O2 sensor, it is unlikely. This is a very common code for these cars and this model year.
If the dealer has actually run diagnostics on the car and checked to confirm the rear O2 sensor is working, then it likely does need a new converter.
These are available on line so you might find one cheaper, just not sure about it being shipped to Sweden.
