'90 Subaru Legacy: 4wheel drive. Does the front drive axle merely pull out of the transaxle for boot replacement?
Optional Information: Year: 1990 Make: Subaru Model: Legacy Already Tried: Nothing yet, just getting prepared.
Hello I will help you with your question,
Inner or outer boot?
If you remove the connection for the lower ball joint to the steering knuckle and use a 3/16" pin punch to drive the pin out of the inner joint collar the axle slides off the stub shaft sticking out of the transmission. The hole is offset and chamfered so note which way it comes off and put it back on the same way.
To disconnect the ball joint remove the pinch bolt and pry the joint out of the knuckle, removing the taped stud and nut from the control arm is very difficult so removing the top pinch bolt is the way to go.
The stub shaft is splined and will remain in the transmission you only have to drive out the spring pin and slide the axle off the stub.
Let me know how I can help you with this
Thank you
