bank 1 sensor 1 indicates the front sensor, in front of the Catalytic Converter:

Thanks for the info, Lurch. But I still need to know how much replacing one of these sensors is going to set me back (on average) and whether one of better known auto repair chains (Firestone, Goodyear, etc.) is qualified to do the replacement. I have checked with my two local Subaru dealerships and the soonest I can get a service appointment is next Thursday or Friday. And I just can't wait that long to get this work done.
