I have an existing small room that has ceiling joist removed

Customer Question

I have an existing small room that has ceiling joist removed but still has the collar ties attace
JA: OK. Tell me a bit more about what's going on so we can help you best.
Customer: sorry collar ties still attached. Want to put a beam under 2x8 existing ridge beam and remove the collar ties. The room is 12 wide by 10 long (beam length). What size beam would I use and should it be carried into the closet area which still has joists and collar ties or should it end in the framed gable wall above the closet.
JA: Is there anything else the Structural Engineer should be aware of?
Customer: Not that
