Customer Question

A client has installed 117/8" TJIs 230 @ 24" o.c. spanning 31.5 ft. They are already in place w/ 3/4" ply sub-floor nailed down. Can you suggest a way to strengthen these joists
sufficiently to support 40 psf LL + 10 psf DL? What about "scabbing" ply for a length
of 8 ft to the web @ the center of the joist? on both sides of the joist?

Hello

Expert:  StructuralEng replied 3 months ago.

I can help.

Expert:  StructuralEng replied 3 months ago.

They're spanning 31.5' with no intermediate support?

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
No intermediate support. They are clear spanning 31.5 ft.
Expert:  StructuralEng replied 3 months ago.

WOW. They will either need an intermediate support (or two, I will check) or you will need to put the properly sized joists in between or next to each of the original joists. Which option do you prefer?

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
An intermediate support is not possible. We need to take some action to "beef up" the existing TJI.

Are they supporting a single floor only with no load bearing walls above?

Will they support any ceramic tile?

Expert:  StructuralEng replied 3 months ago.

For the single floor only and without ceramic tile, you will need 16" TJI 560 at 16" on center.

If you have ceramic tile, you will need LVL 3.5" x 18" 2.0E at 16" on center.
