I'm constructing a wheel chair ramp 5 ft wide 30 ft clear

Customer Question

i'm constructing a wheel chair ramp 5 ft wide 30 ft clear span 1'/12" slope. I will use metal decking with 4in. concrete what would be the minimum beam size 8" or 12" either will work I prefer little or no deflection. I could do an over kill but it just increases the cost.

I can help
Expert:  StructuralEng replied 5 months ago.
Do you want just two beams?

You can plan for two W12x35 beams ASTM A992 Gr. 50 beams to limit deflection to 1" under a full design load
Customer: replied 5 months ago.
the steel company that will sale the beams to me told me 12 @26 would be a over kill I was hoping to get something lighter to save on the cost, are you just covering yourself or do I really need the size you requested?
Expert:  StructuralEng replied 5 months ago.
With a tots load close to 150 psf (90 psf live load and 50 psf slab + 10 psf superimposed dead load), the W12x35 beams are exactly what is needed to limit deflection to 1".

Total load, not tots

That's what the numbers work out to.

If you need calculations, I can provide that as an additional service. That will show the results quite conclusively.
