I have an old house that has 2x8 floor joists. I want to

Customer Question

I have an old house that has 2x8 floor joists. I want to remove the joists on the second level and replace them with LVL beams. I want to make it more of an open concept on the first floor. The span is 24 ', wh ere can I find what size beam to use?

I can help. Do you want to use lvl as joists to clear span the 24'?

I can also use I-joists if needed. I would like to keep the ceiling as high as possible so if I need to double up I can do that. I have 2x4 exterior walls that the current joists are just nailed into. As I am going along I have been putting in a 2x4 cripple to help support the joist. The house was built in 1928 and doesn't have any issues with sagging floors. I just want to have the two rooms open. Thanks
