Will the rafters be on side or both sides? What is the city and state so I can look at snow loading?

The rafters will over hang the beam 12", Marion County, Oregon

A 6x8 is overstressed in bending and just barely works for deflection.

A triple 2x10 is more appropriate supporting a roof only. If it's supporting an attic, too, then a triple 2x12.. Southern pine no. 2.
