Customer Question

Hi, I'm building a treehouse and need some guidance sizing the beams. The span between trees is 20' and the platform will be 20'x10'. There will be two beams spaced 8' apart and both spanning that 20' distance. On the platform I'll have a one story framed "house" that's 8x10, and the rest will be open decking.

Hello. I can help. Can I get back to you in a couple hours?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Sure. I've never used this before; should I expect an email notification?

I will size the beams for a 40 psf live load and 20 psf dead load. I will use pressure treated glulam

Thanks. I've seen some guides that seem to indicate doubled dimensional lumber could work in this range too. Is it possible to size both ways; with glulam and with standard dimensional?

I'm sizing it now

You can plan for a pressure treated glulam 5.125” x 13.5” 24F-V4
Or if you want dimension lumber, each of the two beams would need to be 7 – 2x12 southern pine no. 1 or doug-fir no.1 pressure treated.
