I am wanting to build pole barn style building but in place of wood beams i would like to use steel tube beams is there an engineering table or chart that compares wood beams compared to steel beams? Or is there an engineering firm that can assist me in this project. Thanks Richard M. Lafayette La
Just starting to do research wanting to build building for residential use mostly for back yard shops nothing over forty ft. wide 60 ft wide.
I can help
I am away from my computer right now, can I get back to you in about an hour or two?
I am going to switch over to the Q&A format and we can continue with the e-mail process. When you come back online, just reply to this last e-mail (with my questions) to tell me you are back. I am back online. Do you have any layout drawing that shows some dimensions and the types of spacing you want for your supports, etc.I can size some structural tubing for you if you can give me a general layout/configuration.Before we get started I’d like to point out that a Professional Engineer’s standard of care typically includes a site visit to assess field conditions and get an overall understanding of the structure. This can obviously not be accomplished through the internet. The information provided here is meant for informational purposes only (general sizing and budgeting) and is based on the information provided by you. The only loads considered for this member sizing are vertical loads, no lateral loadings were considered. The information should be verified by a professional engineer who can visit the site to ensure that potentially important information has not been overlooked or omitted.
I guess my question is if I were to take a set of Pole Barn Drawing In my Area and lets say it calls for 8" x 8" Wooden Post for it's main structure post what would be the Estamated Size of Steel Tubing would be Equal to or Stronger In Comparison.
I can size your posts and beams for you, but you need to give me the specific overall dimensions of the building and the spacing of the columns, so I can size the headers/beams. Would you be using pre-manufactured timber truss for the roof? What are the height of your columns, etc.Overall you need to layout the building for your needs and then I can size your members for you.Can you give me that information?

Just let me know when you have your layout determined, and then I can size your elements.
