Buy local first

When you spend your money at small local businesses instead of large commercial chain stores, you are contributing to the development of our community. Not only do small businesses create employment opportunities and pay local taxes which help improve infrastructure and communities services, they are represent environmentally-friendly practices because they cause less pollution and traffic congestion.
Buying locally from our advertisers means thanking those businesses which recognize the important contributions made by Latino and immigrant consumers. These small businesses are innovative in that they offer products and services adapted to their customers’ needs, at attractive prices. In addition to the fact that their storefronts are always one-of-a-kind, their creativity comes from keeping their finger in the pulse of the community in order to discover the needs of their clients. Small business owners are vested in what happens in their community and they are not obligated to serve the interests of big corporations—which lately have benefited most from federal government subsidies.
These small businesses make a great effort to remain visible, the only feasible way to stay afloat during this recession. That is why this past April La Isla Magazine, along with Counselors to America’s Small Businesses (SCORE), facilitated a free presentation with highly experienced mentors who helped our clients in the area of administrative organization, as well teaching them to “take lemons and make lemonade” during these peculiar economic times. Small businesses are what make our community interesting, diverse and attractive. They bring prosperity and upward mobility to the place in which we live. This is why I encourage you to BUY LOCAL first whenever you need a product or a service. These small steps will benefit us all and will not only add to the Latino local economy, but to the greater growth of the overall economy in the region. By buying local we can all grow together!
