I just cloned a hard drive to a SSD and everything

Customer Question

I just cloned a hard drive to a SSD and everything transfered over fine. When I put the new SSD in the laptop though, it gets to the login window and when I type my password, it trys to log in but goes back asking for my password. What could be the issue?

Hi there and welcome

Can you tell me the version of windows you used?

And is it the same hardware on both computers?

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
Same computer, just upgraded hard drive. Windows 10

Thanks

On the sign in screen, hold the Left shift and with it held, click the power icon and click restart.

Keep shift held down until it has restarted and your at a menu.

Choose troubleshoot, Advance options then system restore

Perform a restore from the last restore point and when it is finished, tell me if you can then sign in please.

I tried that and even just resetting PC and keeping files. It said that it was unable to do this task. Could it be something with the partitions?
Expert:  Richard replied 2 months ago.

It can be, but you did a clone of the entire disk correct? Including the partitions?

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
Yeap. It stated everything passed with no errors. I know VSS is an issue sometimes from reading but I would have got a MBR error I believe...
Expert:  Richard replied 2 months ago.

It points to the windows image not being on the partition, as this is the message it would give when trying to reset and not finding the image.

You would have got an MBR error if it was related to the disk itself, plus it would not start.

Did you try entering windows in safe mode?

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
I could not figure out how to get Windows 10 into the classic safe mode
Expert:  Richard replied 2 months ago.

when you use the instructions I gave to do a system restore, there you will see the option to enter in safe mode

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
Alright so what are things I need to check when I get home?
Expert:  Richard replied 2 months ago.

if it loads in Safe Mode, this is the next step we need to know.

But then I am gathering you did not do the system restore as per my initial instructions either? This is different to resetting the pc

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
What cloning software do you recommend that has an easy gui and program does it all itself?
Expert:  Richard replied 2 months ago.

Acronis is the best for this
