When you open avast, do you see it showing the free status?

you have right clicked from the task bar, right click it from the system tray (not the task bar)

Did you buy avast online?
then the easiest way to deal with this issue is to simply uninstall and reinstall avast by logging into avast site and downloading the premium version again. I can do this for you if you like by remoting in within 5-10 minutes.
