Customer Question

i have a windows 10 pro laptop
with all updates recent to 10th Jan 2016
and am having trouble playing some steam games that i have downloaded:
I have steam client *********** built Jan 1 2016 at 15:19:36
gigabyte p34v4 laptop which has a GTX 970M graphics card
Video Card:
Driver: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M
DirectX Driver Name: nvd3dum.dll
Driver Version: 10.18.13.6143
DirectX Driver Version: 10.18.13.6143
Driver Date: 16 Dec 2015
OpenGL Version: 4.5
The game in question here is
orcs must die!
Orcs must die 2
and
Batman Arkham Origins
I am not a heavy gamer - but enjoy the occasional game.
I can only run one game so far - which is Counter -Strike: Global Offensive.
start with the ocrs must die! i have tried to look for help online - and tried disabling the antivirus software, disabling windows defender - even tried the following: by ensuring that the application is run by an administrator:
http://steamcommunity.com/app/102600/discussions/0/666827974666349174/
What i can see is the loading screen - but after that no error message - and i just go back to windows.
also tried the following:
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2305750
let me know what else i can do - dont have enough time to research for an answer - but i know enough about these things - that its probably just some silly seting that needs to be done.
thanks

Hi

This may be happening due to Data Execution Prevention. Do this:

Start > Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance > Data Execution Prevention.

Select "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select:"

Select "Add", navigate to C:\Program Files\Steam (or your default Steam directory), and add Steam.exe to the exception list.

Additionally, you will need to add the executable (hl.exe, for example) for any game you are seeing issues with. These files will either be in \Steam\steamapps\common\<Game Title>\ or in \Steam\steamapps\<Your Steam account Name>\<Game Title>\

Tell me if this doesn't work. But hopefully it should. And please don't leave me a negative rating.

If your issue is solved then please rate me (GOOD) so that I get paid for my services. Thanks

coudlnt add steam - please see screen shot
Expert:  wiz of all replied 11 months ago.

I also face such problems when using Steam.I know what you're going through.

Try running it in compatible mode with XP(Properties->compatibility->run this program in compatibility mode for->select XP).

Click OK.Now run it in administrator mode.Tell me what happens.

Expert:  wiz of all replied 11 months ago.

If it still doesn't work then do this:

Change Physx device to your GPU using Nvidia control panel.

Run Steam as Admin-> Use Win 7 compatibility mode ->Run Game as Admin

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
I am currently away from the computer - so responding from my phone- the admin thing I have tried but not xp comparability I have tried the Windows 7 comparability but that didn't work will be back home in about 1 hour to try this thx for your patience
Customer: replied 11 months ago.

Expert:  wiz of all replied 11 months ago.

For the time ignore it,yeah. But if nothing else works then we will get back to it.

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
excuse me - i got caught up in something!
I tried the windows xp thing on the folder:
D:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Orcs Must Die!\Build\release
where orcsmustdie.exe is located.
and i got the following error
Expert:  wiz of all replied 11 months ago.

You need to apply it on the shortcut exe

Expert:  wiz of all replied 11 months ago.

and also try it with windows 7

Expert:  wiz of all replied 11 months ago.

ok! lets make it run by fixing DEP.

Type cmd in the start search menu, right-click on it and select Run as Administrator.

Enter the following command line

bcdedit.exe /set nx AlwaysOff

Press enter.

Try running the game again.

NOTE: If this solution doesn't work then don't forget to turn DEP back on:

write the following in CMD:

bcdedit.exe /set nx AlwaysOn

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
ok i did the cmd thing - it says operation completed successfully, then i went to the source folder of orcs must die and right clicked on the exe and selected windows 7 compatability - and still same error message.
then i tried to go to dep and select the orcsmustdie.exe file - and i had this error - any other ideas ? shall i do the nvidia thing?
Customer: replied 11 months ago.
mr or ms wiz - sorry i am about to sleeep - i am currently in asia - and will be up in the morning but wont be able to attempt to work on this for another 24 hours.
Expert:  wiz of all replied 11 months ago.

I totally understand!

Just do one last thing when you wake up:

Open the nVidia Control Panel and click on "Manage 3D Settings"
Add orcsmustdie.exe
Scroll down until you find "SLI rendering mode" (or Multi-GPU Rendering Mode) and set this to "Force alternate frame rendering 1" and accept the warning that pops up
Click Apply

Good night! :)

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
managed to steal sometime this am - cant find the setting - cant promise i will get to try until later tonght - it is 9.20 am for me now :)
cant find the setting that you mentioned?
Expert:  wiz of all replied 11 months ago.

Scroll down from the menu until you find SLI rendering mode or Multi-GPU rendering mode....Its got to be down there

Expert:  wiz of all replied 11 months ago.

If this doesn't work then re-open Nvidia control panel. Change Physx device to your GPU.

Still if there's no luck then I'm really sorry but I'm out of ideas. :(

Customer: replied 10 months ago.
hi wiz -
Scroll down from the menu until you find SLI rendering mode or Multi-GPU rendering mode....Its got to be down there
per my screen shot - i did find it - but what i am saying is the options are:
1.use global setting(multi display performance mode)
2. single display perfromance mode
3. compatability performance mode
4.multiple display performance modei selected single display performance mode -
i also change the physx device to gpu - and changed the compatability back to regular windows 10, (nothing checked)
i got to a loading screen, but then i just returned to windows.
i will try the dep thing again but it says that i need to restart - and i cant do that until later tonight.
thanks,
Expert:  wiz of all replied 10 months ago.

Multi-display/mixed GPU acceleration is different than SLI rendering mode or Multi-GPU rendering mode. You need to find it in those options above or below muti-display//mixed GPU acceleration.
