If you plug it into a different USB port on the computer, is it then detected?

ok, it means the data is corrupted on it. Do you have data you need to keep on it?

No, I just use it to back things up on my desktop computer. It is an older machine and I need to replace it.

ok, if there is no data on the drive you need, then format it when asked, then it should now be usable.

It is still telling me to connect storage device to continue backup.

If you connect it on your wifes computer, it is being detected correct right?

I just tried it and yes it does. It shows there is nothing on it which would be right after formatting.

ok, connect it to problem computer.

Then click start, computer on it.

Click in the new window on computer and tell me if you see it there listed where you see C Drive ect

I re-connected it to my desktop and I do see it when I click on My Computer. It is listed as the F: Drive.

ok, so it is connected and working, it is then the software thats at issue.

Can you go to Start, Control Panel, uninstall a Program and uninstall the backup software

Restart the computer, install the software again and then try to perform a backup.

ok, than do the following please

Download CC Cleaner (free) from here

http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner

(Click Download Latest Version on the top right)

Run it and let it scan and repair your registry.

Once done, restart the computer

Than

Click Start, Run and type in CMD and press enter

A black window will open.

Type in it

sfc /scannow

press enter and when it has completed, type in

chkdsk /r

Press enter.

It will give a message "the type of the file system is NTFS cannot lock current drive.

chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts y/n" Say Y, press enter and restart the computer.

Then tell me if the software then detects it please.

I did all the steps you outlined. It took awhile to get through the chkdsk.
Still no luck. same problem. It is asking to connect device to continue backup.

Ok, then last step left is a reinstall of windows as we have attempted all possible repairs.

Can you backup all data off the computer please (as it will wipe all data, programs you will have to install again) and then tell me the make and model of the computer

Wow - How can I back anything up if it is not working? Would buying a new backup device (different brand) be an option ??

No that wont help as the disk works, but you can just copy and paste files to it via file explorer

It is showing 93% backed up. How come some did and other not? Just not sure about the Windows reinstall.

Ok, you copy them like any other files on the computer

So right click the file or folder and select copy

Then go to the Drive and then again right click and select paste.

yes, as you indicated it is accessible on the computer, it is just not being seen but the software.
