Customer Question

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium on a HP laptop. When I try to Update Windows I get a message that the update service is not running. It tells me to restart and try again. I do and get the same result. I used Administrative Tools to check on services and Windows Update says it is running both local and standard. I turned it off and then restarted it. It then says it is running. But when I go back to Update I get the same error message that the service is not running. I tried Microsoft FixIt tool but it did not help either. What can I do to get the Windows update to run?

Hello Larry,

There is also another service you need to check and make sure it is running.

This is the Background Information Transfer Service.

If it's not running, shut down the Windows update service, start that service, then restart the Windows update service.

This is a good place to start troubleshooting this issue.

Viruses can also cause an issue regarding this error.

How long has this been occurring?

Thanks,

Richard
