Windows Vista updates fail to load and I receive an error message that Windows Installer cannot be accessed.
Computer OS: Windows Vista
Rebooting, Tried a few system restore points but Restore encounters an error also an is unable to roll back to a prior date.
Hiya, My name is XXXX XXX I've been repairing and upgrading computers for over 10 years, I will help you to the best of my ability.
Let's try starting the Windows Installer service and see if that helps, but let me know if it says its already started.
Windows Installer is not in the list of programs in the details pane.
That may be the issue!
I assume that you may be able to advise on how to restore Windows Installer?
Hi im back sorry
On moment while I review this
Ok sorry took me a minute to find this
This is where you need to download the windows installer from
If you go down to instructions it will explain a little more
I used the link now I need to make sure that I download the correct file...
Is x64 Platform: Windows6.0-KB942288-v2-x64.msu the correct one for Vista?
x86 Platform: Windows6.0-KB942288-v2-x86.msux64 Platform: Windows6.0-KB942288-v2-x64.msuIA64 Platform: Windows6.0-KB942288-v2-ia64.msu
Okay so I should down all three of them, correct?
No, click start
Go to control panel
System and Maintenance
then select system
What does it say under system type?
Windows Vista Home Premium, Service Pack 2, 64 Bit OS,
x64 Platform: Windows6.0-KB942288-v2-x64.msu
Okay good, I will proceed to down load Windows6.0-KB942288-v2-x64.msu 2.9 MB only right?
Im very sorry for the delay in responses
I received a message that the update does not apply to my system.
try the next one down
Received the same message that it doesn't apply to my system.
Ok thats weird, cause it does
One moment please
Try this one instead
Is it downloading this time?
I downloaded it ... I'll go see if it shows up in the detail pane now.
Windows Installer is still not listed in the detail pane.
Do you want me to try an download the windows updates to see if it workds?
Yes lets download all updates
It should fix that automatically but we will see
in process now.
All seven failed again.
The codes given are 80070641 and 641
I jst went through the dowmload process again from the last link you provided and received the message that it doesn't apply to my system.
oh dear, allow me a moment to think on this
Okay, do think a restart may activate it?
Im going to open this question up to other experts while I think about this some more, if no other expert come in to help you I will be back with an answer.
We can certainly try that
Lets try and see what happens
I will stay here
Okay, will do.
Save this page to your favorites for me so you can get back
Please download this tool if you come back and the installer doesnt work
Installation errors caused due to incorrect patch registration may be corrected using this tool.
Okay, the restart didn't help. I'll save the link to my favorites.
Which file should I download?
I am hoping this helps
After that I am going to open this up for another expert to look at if this fails as well
I will await your reply
Downloaded, I have what I'll call a system window that appeared saying a product code must be specified and press any key to exit. I exited it.
yeah needs to validate your windows is genuine
It is ... It came preloaded on my Dell
So it wont open either
Not sure what you mean?
the program we just downloaded to fix things
Didnt do anything?
Ok, i will opt out of this question, I am not feeling very good which does not help me think very clearly. Hopefully the next expert can get this squared away for you
Sorry, Hope you feel better ... should I just standby?

Hi: Did you check this microsoft linkits expalined well in details here
No, but I will do it now.
another relevant linkhttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/2642495or http://helpdeskgeek.com/how-to/how-to-fix-the-windows-installer-service-could-not-be-accessed-error/or try this 1. At Start type "regedit" HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM CurrentControlSet Services MSIServer right click on WOW64, select "Modify" Change Value data from "1" to "0" 2. At "Start" type "run" type "services.msc" go to "Windows Installer" and stop and start the program. 3. Reboot computer.lordnomi41011.9576378819
Windows Installer was not listed in the services tab of the System Configuration Utility.
Click on StartRun type msiexec /unreg (note the space after "msiexec") \press "Enter"Next, access the "Run" line again and type msiexec /regserver (note the space) and press "Enter"
Okay, I have completed those instructions. What is next?
reboot the computerand try to update windows now
Windows Updates still fail ... Codes 80070641 and 641 listed.
another microsoft linkhttp://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_other-windows_update/updates-not-responding-error-code-80070641/446c108b-3222-46f9-ad2c-05dd231fd071But if not fixed im afraid i read people ended up reinstall windows again :(
The message returned when I input the stop command indicates that the specified service does not exist as an installed service.
still its windows installer issuetime to backup data and get ready for formatting :(
Assume you're suggesting reloading Vista? I have a backup on Carbonite. I can run one using windows too. I need to make a list of all my applications before I proceed with this.
yesbackup all your datadriverseach and eveythingi would recommend you to backup the current state of laptop using Paragon Backup and Recoveryhttp://www.paragon-software.com/home/br-free/Its a free softwareIn case the reformatting and new installation doesnt work, you can roll back to current state anyhowBetter go for Windows 7 if you want a change :)
I was reading some of the posts on one of the MS links you provided and some people have had success with a "clean boot" ... Is that something you would recommend before a vista reload?
i supposed you tried those things?please try all those options before going for a reloadits worth trying since you will have to install all applications and things back to new installationit takes a while
okay, I'll try that tomorrow.
All the best If you need any help , post me a message please
Hi, I am Jins here again. Sorry for the delay in reply. You need not format the drive and re-install windows. You need to activate your built in administrator account. First you’ll need to open a command prompt in administrator mode by right-clicking and choosing “Run as administrator” (Type cmd in the start menu search text box. Right click on the cmd listed under programs list and select run as administrator)
Now type the following command:
net user administrator /active:yes
net user administrator /active:yes
You should see a message that the command completed successfully. Log out, and you’ll now see the Administrator account as a choice.
Great, I will proceed with your instructions and get back with you once I'm finished.
The ccleaner found and repaired registry issues but did not repair to the point that updates would download. Still unable to access Windows Installer. I will proceed with the Vista repair instructions and advise.
Completed the Vista repair process per the instructions but updates attempts continue to fail due to being unable to access Windows Installer Codes 80070641 and 641. I'll await further instructions.
Are there any other possible actions that I can take short of reformatting my disk and relaoding Vista?
Start the Windows Installer service
Windows Installer Registry Fix
If the above steps do not help or if the Windows Installer service is not listed in the Services applet, follow these steps:
The Windows Installer servie was not listed so I moved on to the second set of instructions. I saved the msiserver.zip file to my desktop. I unzipped it and saved the msiserver.reg file to my desktop. When I right click on it and select MERGE I get an Open File Security Warning window that provides two choices, "Run" or "Cancel" . When I run it I get the following opened in Notepad... (Wasn't sure what to do with it so I
just performed a restart and tried to truied to download the updates which failed because Windows Installer cannot be accessed.
