My wife is receiving Social Security disability for Alzheimer's. She worked for SSA and had her retirement frozen till she reached 62. When she turns 62 can she receive disability and her retirement or does she just receive the disability.

I am collecting disability benefits from social security and would like to try to work again. I have had four leg/hip surgeries and still need to use crutches/cane for assistance. I absolutely cannot jeopardize my SSA income. I know there are back to work programs but I am self employed and I believe the guidelines are much more restrictive for independent contractors. I have not worked since September, 2010. Before my surgeries, I was self employed and worked as a financial/business development consultant. In the past, I charged clients a retainer fee to start work and then a negotiated fee for closing (only if it closed, otherwise no earnings). I am not physically able to do the work I previously performed and would need to hire employees to help, especially with anything physical, like site visits and closings. What are the SSA rules here? Should I even try to get to work again or is there a risk of losing my disability benefits, when I am not even sure this will work out? It seems that the SSA guidelines for the self employed are very restrictive, and yet I am not able to work any other way. Please help. Thank you.
