Customer Question

My first husband passed away. We were divorced when he passed away. Am I able to claim his social security benefits when I retire?
JA: These retirement benefits are supposed to help us but they can be so complicated! The Retirement Expert will help you get the most benefits propertly. Please tell me more, so we can help you best.
Customer: What more do you need to know?
JA: Is there anything else the Retirement Accountant should be aware of?
Customer: Not that I know? We were married for 14 years. He passed away 6 years ago. I am remarried. He had a "deathbed marriage" and at the time he passed, he had been married two weeks.

Hello,

If you were married for at least 10 years, then you are entitled to the same benefits under your divorced spouse's Social Security account, even if he has predeceased you -- as you would were he still living.
