Customer Question

I work for the state and I only pay into Medicare. I have been employed with the state for 18 years. Before I began work I did contribute to social security and I am one quarter shy from having all my quarters. I am 41 years old and have been experiencing some severe health issues. My husband is also a state employee, but he has all his quarters vested in with social security. Can I apply for disability as his spouse through the social security administration?

Hi. My name is ***** ***** I will be happy to help you.

Social security disability must be based on your own records, not your spousal records. You may be eligible for spousal benefits once you reach 62.

You do not need all 40 credits to apply for disability as long as you have at least 20 credits earned in the ten years immediately before you become disabled.

If you work for state you may be eligible for some states disability benefits.
