My name is***** and I will be helping you with your question today. This is for informational purposes only and does not establish an attorney client relationship. The reason is that you cannot take both benefits at once, these benefits do not stack. You only receive the higher of the two benefits. What is happening as you are able to switch over to the survivor benefit and receive that because it is higher. Many people think you get the retirement benefit plus the survivor benefit and that cannot happen according to SSA regulations. That is why your benefit is only being increased a small amount because that is the difference between your benefit and hers (it is likely that they are no longer deducting Medicare which is the reason it is not exactly $144 more and is instead $179. Please let me know if you have any further questions and please positively rate my answer if satisfied. There should be smiley faces or numbers from 1-5 to choose from. This extra step will cost you nothing extra and will ensure that I will be compensated for my time by the site.
