Customer Question

I am a legal guardian for my twin nieces. Recently their only living parent died (mother) Their father passed away five years ago. If we were to adopt them would the monthly benefit that they receive from their deceased father stop? My husband is getting ready to retire in three years and we are not sure that we could afford to raise them without the financial assistance.

Hi again. No, adopted children receiving a survivor benefit do not lose that benefit, fortunately. See here at page 11: http://ssa.gov/pubs/10077.html
