need to know if Robert LaClair Knoll, social security # \xxxxxxxxx is still alive. Walked out on family when his daughter was 4 years old, her mother died recently and her mothers pension cannot be touched until she can prove he is dead or alive. Last possible address was in Denver Colorado.

In my experience, ancestry.com and familysearch.org have accurate interfaces into the Social Security death index. Information such as his birthdate or birthplace, and when he disappeared, could be helpful in adjusting the filters, but if he changed his name, the death index won't help.

Social Security will almost never tell you if a person with a given SSN is alive, and rarely when he is dead.
