Customer Question

I am being inundated with e-mails regarding maximizing social security payments.
Both my wife and I are collecting. There are constant references to " spousal benefits" which I do not truly understand. There is an indication that those benefits should bring the spouses collections to 50% of the original filers amount.. I collect approximately $2,300 per month and my wife collects approximately 900
Should she be getting the additional benefits, and what has to be done to effectuate that if it is available?

Hi, my name is ***** ***** my goal here is to provide you with the most complete and accurate answer possible.

You can visit the Social Security Administration's website at http://www.ssa.gov/forms/ssa-2.html to apply for spousal benefits. In addition this page http://www.ssa.gov/planners/retire/applying6.html#&a0=0 discusses benefits that spouses are entitled to. Social Security generally pay the higher of the spousal benefit or benefits based upon their own earnings record.

I hope this answers your question. Please let me know if I can clarify anything or answer any additional questions. Thanks, Jonathan
