I am currently 66, but began receving my Social Security at age 65 (approx $2,100/mo). My wife, age 59, is still working and plans to retire at age 62 (her age full retirement benefit at age 66 will be approx $2,100/mo as well). Can she file a restricted application at her full retirement age (age 66) to claim half of my beneft (in order to defer claiming on her benefit until age 70), despite the fact that I started my Social Security benefit 1 year prior to full retirement age?

Thank you for your question. My name is XXXXX XXXXX I will be happy to help

Megan C :

Your wife is free to select the spousal benefit at her full retirement age, and defer her payment until age 70

Megan C :

Whether or not she can defer benefits depends on her age - she could not take the spousal benefit prior to full retirement age.

Megan C :

But, once she reaches 66 she can file and draw spousal benefits and allow her own to grow to its max at age 70

All of this despite me filing 1 year before my full retirmenet age?

Megan C :

Yes, your age doesn't matter.

Megan C :

She will just get 1/2 of your reduced benefit, is all.
