I was married 14.9 years when my Husband died (1992, 41 years old). We both worked for GM (hourly). Ken had 29.5 years with GM so no pension. I worked 24 years, retiring in 1998, disability, MS. Is there any way I can collect anything off my Husband's S.S.? In June he would of been 62, I am now 56. TYVM Sandy Fairgrove, MI

Megan C :

Hello, Sandy how are you today?

Megan C :

You will be eligible for a survivor's benefit off your husband's record, but only once you reach the age of 60

Megan C :

So, you still have 4 years before you can draw.

Megan C :

Are you on social security disability currently?

Customer:

Yes I am getting SS since 1998

Megan C :

Ok. Unfortunately you can only draw one benefit, so you can draw your disability or your widow benefit, whichever is greater. Since you are disabled you can draw the survivor benefit now, at age 50

Megan C :

So, I would call social security and see which benefit is greater - the benefit off your husband's record, or your benefit you are currently getting

Customer:

should I call a special number for this question?

Megan C :

No, you would just call the normal hotline at(NNN) NNN-NNNN/p>

Megan C :

You could also visit your local office, if you wanted to

Customer:

TYVM

Megan C :

Megan C :

Is there anything else I can assist you with today?

Megan C :

Customer:

yes I will

Megan C :

Thanks so much!
