I am currently on Railroad Retirement and am about to start

This answer was rated:

I am currently on Railroad Retirement and am about to start a job that pays into Social Security. Will I develop any SS retirement benefits, will this get rolled into and increase my RR Retirement payment, or will this money just disappear?

Dimitry K., Esq. :

Thank you for your question. Please permit me to assist you with your concerns.

Dimitry K., Esq. :

If I may ask, what is your age? And I am assuming that you as yet are not receiving any benefits directly from Social Security, correct?

Customer:

my age is 61and I am only receiving RR Retirement.

Dimitry K., Esq. :

In that case your social security would continue to accrue

Dimitry K., Esq. :

Social Security continues accruing until you elect to take it, which you can do at minimum benefits at 62, or at full benefits at 66

Dimitry K., Esq. :

but until that happens, if you continue working, the benefits and calculations for Social Security can continue increasing.

Customer:

That is what I needed to know.

Dimitry K., Esq. :

Glad to help. Is there anything else I can answer for you?

Customer:

So I will receive payments from RR Retirement and SS?

Dimitry K., Esq. :

That is correct. Obtaining RR retirement does not affect your SS benefits

Dimitry K., Esq. :

The former is a private benefit, and SS benefits are a governmental entitlement.

Customer:

Thank you I think we are finished.
