a friend of mine is on ssi visiting his home country of canada. He is a resident alien in Us. How long can he receive his ssi benefits while visiting canada?

Megan C :

I realize you have a question about social security. My goal is to provide you with excellent service, and help you better understand your options.

Megan C :

Is your friend on regular benefits or low income benefits?

Customer:

ssi is low income benefits and i would think u would know that is answering questions re: social security benefits.

Megan C :

Yes, I know that, but sometimes people use the wrong terminology

Megan C :

It does make a difference.

Customer:

yes, he is on ssi

Megan C :

Okay. In that case, he cannot receive benefits while he is outside the US, if his travel is more than just a temporary visit ... so, if he stays longer than 30 days, his benefits will be suspended

Customer:

can i ask another question

Megan C :

Yes, you sure may

Customer:

can ssi benefits be transfered to canada?

Megan C :

He would have to meet whatever criteria is set in place in Canada. IT's not like retirement benefits, which can be paid there indefinitely

Megan C :

It would not be an automatic change. He would have to apply in Canada

Customer:

so, he would need to apply for disability benefits thru canada?

Megan C :

Yes, as SSI is not based on your work record it would not transfer over directly

Customer:

Do u have any idea where he would start this process in b.c.

Megan C :

I'm truly sorry, but I do not know anything about how the process would go in Canada.

Megan C :

I can only speak to how the US benefit behaves

Customer:

OK. can I print the questions and answers. Thank you

Megan C :

Yes, you can print them using your browser's print function
