I am now 60 years old. My husband passed away while in the service after we were married 4 years. I have been told that since he passed away I can retire at 60. My question is, can I, and do I collect from him or my self and does it affect my VA check?

MyVirtualCPA :

I realize you have a question about social security. My goal is to help you better understand your options.

MyVirtualCPA :

I'm sorry to hear about your loss

MyVirtualCPA :

Yes, you can retire at age 60 and draw survivor benefits

MyVirtualCPA :

It will not impact your VA check

Customer:

Does the survior benitits equal my VA check? I am wondering how much I will get . That will tell me if I get enough to live on with my VA check.

MyVirtualCPA :

Your survivor benefit is about 70% of what he would have drawn at full retirement age

MyVirtualCPA :

It is reduced because you are taking it before full retirement age

Customer:

He would have already been retired as of this date.

MyVirtualCPA :

Yes, but your benefit is based on when you draw

MyVirtualCPA :

If you are under full retirement age, it is reduced regardless of his age

Customer:

Ok, so that I would find out at the regular SS office?

MyVirtualCPA :

Yes, or by calling 1-800-772-1213

Customer:

You have been a great help. Thank you so much,
