I will be 62 in Aug. 2013...I am currently receiving my deceased husbands Soc. Sec....What do I do to start receiving Medicare & will I get any of my own Soc. Sec.

retirementlawyer :

In terms of medicare, you would have to wait till age 65,

retirementlawyer :

In regards XXXXX XXXXX own social security you can apply for it at anytime, and it would be given to you if the benefit is higher than your widow benefit,

retirementlawyer :

It would be best to wait till age 66 to apply for your own benefit as there would be no early penalty.

Customer:

Is that age 66 for Soc. Sec. or medicare?

retirementlawyer :

it is for social security, in terms of medicare you can apply at age 65

Customer:

Can that be done online?...they closed down my local office

retirementlawyer :

yes, you can apply for medicare online,

retirementlawyer :

It takes less than 10 minutes. In most cases, once your application is submitted electronically, you’re done. There are no forms to sign and usually no documentation is required. Social Security will process your application and contact you if we need more information. Otherwise you’ll receive your Medicare card in the mail.
