Customer Question

I just had my 65th birthday and elegible for SS @ age 66, my husband died in 1985 and I have not remarried. Will I be elegible to collect any of his SS? At present I am still working and setting up for retirement. When can I resgister for SS?

Thank you for your question, Glenna. I will do my best to assist you with your concerns. If you would like me to clarify my answer, I will be happy to do so.

To answer your question directly, provided that you were married for 10 or more years, once you hit your retirement age, you would have the choice of either filing for your benefits, of for 50% of his full benefits as spousal benefits. To file, you can apply for Social Security retirement benefits when you are at least 61 years and 9 months of age and want your benefits to start in the next three months. Even if you are not ready to retire, you should still sign up for Medicare four months before your 65th birthday. Since you just turned 65, you can contact the Social Security Administration now and register for your benefits.

Good luck.

Kindly remember to only rate my answer when you are fully satisfied. I will be happy to continue further and assist you until I was able to explain your concern to your satisfaction.

Please be aware that if you give any rating below 3 stars then I will not be compensated in any way for helping you today. Good luck to you!
