mother-n-law is on social security...she had a stroke...now in nursing facility...applied for medicaid...now being told medicare is gonna stop in 5 days...if medicare does stop, and medicaid takes over, will mother-n-law lose her social security pay to nursing facility?

mother-n-law is on social security...she had a stroke...now in nursing facility...applied for medicaid...now being told medicare is gonna stop in 5 days...if medicare does stop, and medicaid takes over, will mother-n-law lose her social security pay to nursing facility?Hi, yes, typically, the patient is responsible for paying what they can for their own care - if the state medicaid program, which is welfare, is going to take over (i.e. your state taxpayers) because your mother in law lacks enough money to pay her own medical nursing care way, she can not have income (aside from about $20/mo) for herself, while asking the state to pay her full bill. She must pay what she can (basically, all but $20), and they will cover the rest. Part of the reasoning is that she also has all of her basic needs (food, shelter, etc) met, which she can help pay for with her own income.
