Customer : My iPhone screen is locked up - I can't enter my pasword.
Customer : The iPhone keeps rebooting, over and over . . .
authentech :

I see you are rebooting it. Lets hard reboot it. Do this by pressing and holding down the power key and the Home key at the same time. You will need to hold these for about 20 seconds, until you see the apple symbol.

authentech :

Then release them.

Customer : I've tried the hard reboot a few times already . . .
authentech :

So you are trying to log in and the screen is not recognizing your touching of the buttons or what?

Customer : Exactly. I touch the buttons to enter my passcode but the buttons don't work.
authentech :

what version of the iphone is this?

Customer : iPHone 4S
Customer : Are you still there?
authentech :

try triple tapping the home key. They may set it to voice (then try to voice enter your password) or it will deactivate voice and your screen will work again.

Customer : Triple taping the home key doesn't cause any reaction. Is there a way to "unplug" the bottery and plug it back in?
authentech :

Unfortunately, no. The unplug feature you are recommending should have the exact same effect as hard resetting it by holding the power and home keys for 20 seconds. If you have done that, then this would not help anyway. Unfortunately, the phone would have to be completely disabled to unplug the battery.

authentech :

not disabled, I mean disassembled

Customer : Hmmm . . . any other suggestions? I've tried plugging it in to power, but it doesn't appear to charge.
Customer : What does the "hole" on the right side of the phone do?
authentech :

It sounds as if there may be a hardware problem with your phone. The good news is that since the 4s hasn't been out for more than a year, it should be under warranty. You will need to take your phone to a local Apple repair facility to be able to let them look at it and replace it under warranty. I'm sorry that I could not help with this hardware problem.

authentech :

Please rate my response below based on my willingness to help and not the actual difficulty of the problem you are having. Thanks and good luck!

Customer : Bummer . . . thank you for trying.
Customer : I appreciate your help, but I assume I won't be charged since we couldn't fix the problem?
authentech :

You are welcome! Remember, I don't get credit for the assist unless you rate me at neutral or higher (rating system below). I have no control of the charges for this site. I am only a lowly tech helping answer questions. You can contact the site directly to determine what type of charges they have and how they are applied.

authentech :

Unfortunately that won't give me credit as it has to be neutral or higher. Thanks anyway (you can always change it).

Hello and thank you for using this service,

Why aren't you taking this phone for replacement under warranty, as suggested by the previous expert? That was good advice, considering the warranty won't last long, and the phone appears to be defective.

Customer replied 294 days and 3 hours ago.

I'm out of town and I was hoping there was a way to get it working tonight.

Well , with all due respect, I think you know as well as I do that is an unrealistic and impossible expectation. We are answering questions over the Internet and are giving advice. Of course, there is no way we can physically give you a new phone to replace yours that has now been diagnosed as being defective. Also, I would ask that you consider rating the previous expert at a higher rating , as a 1 or 2 stars is actually a negative mark on our records. I don't think that is deserved for a complete and accurate answer.

Customer replied 294 days and 3 hours ago.

I'm not dissappointed in the service. Yes, I hoped that you guys would know something that I don't. There are many times I can't figure out a technology issue and the IT person says "You do it like this - problem solved." I was hoping that the problem I was having could be solved other than by doing a hard reboot.

Perhaps I misunderstand the rating system. I was under the impression that if I rated the experience higher - the next level said "problem solved" or somehting like that. Am I mistaken?

Yes, some of the ratings have been mislabelled. That's why we ask simply that you rate 3 stars or higher. 1 or 2 stars is a NEGATIVE rating, and a negative mark on the personal record of the expert. Also , the expert isn't compensated in any way for his time if you do that. You shouldn't do this, unless you were given poor or incomplete advice. In my opinion , you were given great advice. May not have been the answer you wanted to hear (have to replace phone) , however, it is the correct answer.

Customer replied 294 days and 3 hours ago.

I don't mind upgrading his rating to more stars, but I'm not sure I want to pay for a service that didn't result in a fix. If I do, then I will question using the JustAnswer service next time. The first question I'll have to ask myself is "what is the probability that an "expert" can solve the problem.

I'm not sure what that response is supposed to mean, but you can certainly do what you will. I've explained the answer and situation to you as a courtesy to both you and the expert.

In looking on the Internet I see some people are suggesting a DFU Restore while it is connected to my PC.

What do you think?

Welcome, how are you today? Please allow me a moment as I prepare an answer or inquire further information for the problem. Thank you.

Hello Gary,

I am sorry to hear that you are having so much issue with your Iphone. I read through the answers, and was surprised not to see the option of restoring the phone. Sometimes the phone's internal software can become corrupt, causing the phone to work improperly or erratically. Please keep in mind that a restore however, will delete all your information on your phone! (Though I have a feeling you are more worried about the use of the phone rather than what's on it at this point.)

First, plug your phone into a USB port on your computer that has the Itunes software downloaded. Select your Iphone in the left panel when it appears under devices. Select the Summary tab. Then select the restore option.

It will ask you if you wish to back up your device. Attempt a back up (though the back-up may be corrupt in itself since the device is not working properly). After the back-up it should begin to restore the phone into normal factory settings.

If this worked, and your phone is working again, you can attempt to restore the previously made back-up to regain all your lost information. Be for warned however that the back-up may be corrupt and may just cause your phone to begin the same issue.

After the restore, make sure to connect the phone to itunes to re-activate your Iphone. If you have iOS 5 or later, you will need to follow the iOS setup assistant.

I hope the above fixes your problem. In most cases, if this does not resolve your issue, then the problem lies within the hardware and can not be repaired except for a qualified Apple technician. However, should the above fix not work, please let me know and I will assist into further troubleshooting the issue at hand to make sure that all angles have been covered.

Thank you and have a wonderful day.

Thank you!

I found a similar answer on the Internet, and now I feel more comfortable with an affirmation from you.

I am out of town and am downloading the iTunes software on my laptop PC. I normally connect my iPhone to me iMac.

After I install iTunes, I'll give it a try. And you're right, at this point I just want to be able to make and receive phone calls. I can use my iPad for everything else.

Not a problem Gary,

I apologize that I could not be of assistance sooner and that you had the frustrating experience of having to deal with a broken phone. I know how miserable it can be not to have your lifeline (that's what mine is) available to you.

If you feel that I helped to satisfy your problem, please read my signature. Although, if you first have more questions, please do not hesitate, by all means ask. I am here for you to help you on each step of the way.

While I personally use an Android phone, I do recognize there is little that goes wrong with an Apple phone that is not fixed by a simple restore, which is a nice and easy fix compared to some phones.

Once again, if you get stuck at any point in the process, please let me know and I will attempt to guide you.

Thank you sir, and have a wonderful day.
