Customer Question

Hello, one of our corporate users that uses an iPhone keeps receiving a popup spam message from "http://newnotice.org saying he won something. This is obviously spam. It happens in every program. What could be causing this? He has a regular iPhone 4 with no jailbreak or anything like that. Normal business apps. Only for business use. I will try to post a screenshot.

ITPeter :

Hello, I am Pete, and I'll be happy to assist with your question today.

ITPeter :

Some sites the user has been visiting have been somehow made to be carriers of a malicious JavaScript that redirects them to this popup site.

ITPeter :

You can prevent the popups occurring byinstalling AdBlock or GlimmerBlocker,

ITPeter :

You could also try JavaScript Blocker, which will help block JavaScripts from running on certain sites.

Customer :

.....Did you happen to miss the part where I said this was an iPhone? None of that is possible with an iPhone...

Customer :

ITPeter :

No, I got that part!

ITPeter :

It is possible to block popup ads on the iPhone -

ITPeter :

AdBlock is an extension for MobileSafari that filters out advertisements when you are surfing the Internet from your iPhone.

ITPeter :

You could also turn off Javascript completely to help block the ads:
From the iPhone home screen, tap Settings. Scroll down and tap the Safari button. Under Security, slide Javascript to Off.

Customer :

How in the world do you install adblock? And as for Javascript, we need that for some internal applications. I just want to know how to make this particular problem go away

ITPeter :

Are any web pages currently open in Safari?

ITPeter :

I ask this because there must be some link to the original website that is still driving the popups.

ITPeter :

Either an open browser page or an app that has been installed...

Customer :

This isn't just in Safari... it happens in Mail.app and other applications

ITPeter :

Are you certain that the iPhone isn't jailbroken?

Customer :

Positive.

ITPeter :

Have you tried restoring the iPhone to factory settings?

Customer :

No... and we really don't want to... that would require entirely resetting up the phone which the user doesn't have time for right now.

ITPeter :

What other applications does it happen in apart from Mail.app?

ITPeter :

If it is only appearing in Mail, then here is a simple fix:

ITPeter :

Goto Settings>Notifications>Mail> the choose "Alerts" in the alert style menu. Set the Alert Style to "None".

Customer :

Fixed the issue myself.
