My Iphone will not cut on at all . it will only come on when it isplugged in on a dock. It then says to get on itunes to activate

What if the computer I initially used to activate my phone is not available anymore?
In that case, you will not be able to restore your phone from any backup. After the reset, it will be cleared of all data, just as it was when you first purchased it.
I'm not very computer literate, what do you mean by installing firmware?
"Installing firmware" is another term for "Reinstalling" the system.

I can't use that computerany more. can I use another computer with Itunes to do this?
You can use any computer to do this; however, keep in mind that you will lose all on the phone.
