I have a six year old Generac 7kW automatic standby

Customer Question

I have a six year old Generac 7kW automatic standby generator. It starts fine, recharges the battery but is generating power at a low voltage. Do you have any ideas as to the cause of the problem? I have checked electrical connections. Once in awhile it will jump up to full voltage but quickly drop back down. This is with a very low load, only light or 2 on.

My meter is analog so I don't have an exact number. But looking at the needle reading, I would estimate around 40 volts.

If the voltage is fluctuating that much, but the engine speed is remaining steady, you have a bad voltage regulator.
