I have a 2002 John Deere GT 225 and I was aerating my yard and the tractor stopped and is making a grinding sound when I try to go forward. It will go backwards but with the grinding sound coming from transmission.

Yes check the fluid in trans axle,

also remove the filter and check for metal in the filter

for failure, but what you are describing is trans fail
