Customer Question

I have a 23 HP kholer in a cub cadet gt 3000. Getting fuel spark still no start
JA: Do you have fuel in the tank? If so, is the shut-off valve open and the fuel clean?
Customer: Has new fuel shut off is on
JA: Do you plan on doing the work yourself?
Customer: Yes I thought it was the sensor under the seat so clamped it closed it seems like it is a sensor
JA: Anything else we should know to help you best?
Customer: It ran well last week left it in the rain now no start but it cranks

Hi, my name is***** will be assisting you.

What happens if you remove the air filter and spray some carburetor cleaner or fuel directly into the intake and try to start the engine? Will is start and run a short time?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
No I can see fuel squirting in the carb I tried ether still no start

I pulled plugs out seemed the be dirty. I cleaned them put them back in.

Based on the information that you have provided I would be looking at one of two things.

  1. Valve train, possible push rod issue, valves not operating as they should.
  2. Spark timing, Flywheel key sheared.

If the machine was operating okay the last time that you used it, you shut it off and now won't restart I would be leaning more towards a flywheel key issue.

On the new ignition systems where we have electronic ignition coils or modules the flywheel key can be sheared and the flywheel spun 90 degrees and you will still get a spark every time the magnet on the flywheel passes by the ignition coil.

It might be something with timing because it back fires through carb and exhaust at same time
Expert:  JohnF2015 replied 1 month ago.

Ignition timing on this engine is done with the flywheel key as I have already pointed out.

Flywheel key is not sheared off it is in perfect condition not even a scratch on it.
