Wet or dry ? The vacuum has an internal filter that has to be in place, or the dust/water will come out the upper fan housing! When vacuuming water, the filter is just a sponge filter. When pickup is dry material, it has to have filter element that will stop the dirt/dust from exiting the vacuum chamber.
