How long has the saw sat since it last ran ?
Expert:  Briggs-Fan replied 6 months ago.
Being it's starting briefly with starting fluid tells us it's not getting gas by way of the carburetor. If it sat for a period of time then those carburetors have rubber diaphragms and gaskets and screens , the pumper gasket can become brittle and not pump fuel any longer. It also could be the fuel screen clogged , being a chainsaw I've seen many have the fuel screen blocked up with saw dust . So I definitely think the carburetor needs to be removed cleaned and sprayed out with gumout carburetor cleaner and a rebuild kit put in it .

I'm out of town now but when I return I'll follow your suggestion and clean and rebuild the carburetor
