I got a 2003 JD LX 279 lawn tractor. Kawasaki Engine 17 hp

Customer Question

I got a 2003 JD LX 279 lawn tractor. Kawasaki Engine 17 hp liquid cooled,#
FD501V151414. 300hours on it. Problem:
At start up a lot oil burnt smoke out of exhaust but once warm it disapates.
Both plugs look normal not wet but gray color appear normal. No large oil consumption noted.
Changed oil every 25-30 hrs. with filter, during change yesterday did note a faint smell of fuel in oil. Any suggestions?

Fuel in the oil will always cause engine to draw oil into the cylinders. Usually caused by a bad needle valve/float in the carburetor. I would repair carburetor and watch the oil for any evidence of gas in the oil. I like to put a positive fule shutoff valve in the fuel line before the carburetor, and shutoff the fuel between uses.

Great idea, I'll put shut off valve on fuel line to see if it helps. Carburetor work maybe out of my league.

Briggs 494768 is one inline shutoff.
