Have you looked at the drive belt between engine and transmissions? Belt may have chunks missing!

please email any other suggestions. We bought the mower used, but owner demonstrated it and it seemed fine. (This is wife again, hubby very upset) He is a retired aircraft mechanic so is frustrated that he can't find the problem. I will assume we can get back when he settles down. Is our payment good for a few days?
