i have a southern states 17.5 briggs and straton engine and it cranks over then stops over and over.

Hi my name is ***** ***** welcome to Just Answer . Try removing the spark plug and see if it cranks over easily , if so it sounds like a compression build up and could be a valve adjustment or a lose rocker arm etc

I adjusted the valves in it the exhaust was .005 and the intake was .003 and I took the spark plug out cranks over easy put back together still does the same thing
