You say resistor wire? Do you mean the diode on the wire from the stator/chraging coil?

The diode is the recifier that changes the AC voltage from the stator, to DC volts to charge the battery.

that's it - what are the spec's on this diode so I can get a replacement?

There are no specs on the diode. You can find a diode at electronic supply that would be rated at 15 amps. But I would order the Briggs part number.
