I have a &S 18.5 HP Craftsman mower that just started

Customer Question

I have a B&S 18.5 HP Craftsman mower that just started blowing heavy black smoke out the exhaust. Mower still runs but I don't want to push my luck. This started 3 days ago. There is no smoke until it warms up after about 5 minutes. Thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Black smoke not white? No lose in power? Black smoke would be fuel, check the carburetor choke flap to see if it is staying open.

Is oil level ok and not thin from gas in the oil?

Did you find problem?

Nothing found. Checked carb, oil and fuel. Re-adjusted Intake and Exhaust valves with no change. Mower going to shop tomorrow.

Not white/grey smoke, which would be blown head gasket? Common problem on the single cylinder OHV Briggs engine.
