Engine model number?

Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

Will engine spin freely if you remove the spark plug?

Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

Do you have a voltmeter to check the voltage when you turn key to start?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I do not have a voltmeter handy it did spin freely for a few moments then it stopped,
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I'll have to look for the engine model number
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

Was old battery same CCA rating? Did you clean the battery cable connections? If you find voltmeter, the battery voltage has to stay above 8 volts while cranking. If it does, and engine does not spin, the starter is bad.

Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

If engine acts like it is hard to turn from initial contact, on single cylinder Briggs engines, the compression release may not be working.

ok I won't be able to get one until tomorrow. if the starter is the issue can it be cleaned or does it have to be replaced?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
it's the same cca rating and I did clean the connectors
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

You would want to replace it.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
model number is ***** Briggs & Stratton I/C Platnium 15.5HPOHV
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

693551 should be right one.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
ok thank you. so what could I be looking at if the voltage does not stay above 8
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

If voltage drops below 8 volts, battery/cable problem.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
ok I'll get a volt meter tomorrow what if the engine spins but just very slowly and just a few times?
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

Do you have compression gage? If over 100 psi, the compression release on the camshaft can be damaged! Not common on this engine, but more common on the newer Intek single cylinder Briggs engines!

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I got a new starter installed and still nothing it will try and turn the slightest bit if I have a jump box on the battery but if not nothing. again a new battery too. I had a volt meter on the battery and it only reads between 9 and 10 drops to 1 or 2 when I try to start it
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

Battery or cable is only reason voltage drops that low. Go back and check the cables, and a nee battery , fully charged should be 13 + volts

Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.

Has to be battery or cable problem. That is the only reasons the voltage will drop like that!
